Ever find yourself looking at your drawing or painting disappointedly and thinking “something about it looks ‘funny'” — but not knowing what that is and so lost as to what to do about it and make it look “right”? Sometimes simply “eyeballing”, “guestimating”, and “freehanding” does not result in an accurate representation of what you see in front of you.

This 3-week drawing class is intended to help you to learn and practice techniques to more accurately render shape, size and position of objects relative to each other in your efforts whether two-dimensional in drawing, painting or prints or three-dimensional in sculpture by applying these simple methods. Most frequently this is the result of not understanding the basic principles of linear perspective — how the appearance of objects changes depending on the angle they are viewed from and how they recede in space — and proportion, shape, size and position of objects relative to each other. Learn to understand how these principles apply to the visual world and more accurately represent three-dimensional space on a two dimensional surface.

Charcoal can be messy; please dress accordingly.

Materials will be provided for in-class use, however students may wish to have their own supply as well:

  • newsprint
  • vine soft charcoal
  • chamois patch
