Annie Rhodes Lee was raised in Charleston. Her family were generational tree farmers so she spent much time roaming the woods and swamps. These environments and their histories sowed a fertile ground for questioning cultural stories and myths. After graduating Virginia Commonwealth University School of Art she set up a studio in New York City where its global perspective and cultural diversity began to overlay and contour the narratives in her work. “Land Minds” presents two perspectives of landscape as a composite of both memory and culture. On the one hand the land acts as a force embedding our memories and histories, thereby keeping us grounded. On the other hand the collective rubble of culture reflects the resilience of our adaptability, even when faced with destruction and displacement. It is clay’s chameleon character that allows these narratives to flow from concrete to cloth to flesh interweaving memory and mystery as the stories stack one atop another. Annie Rhodes Lee now has a studio at Folly Beach.
