Entre Nous

Artist: Shelby Corso & Aline Doyle
Exhibit Dates: August 29 – October 11
Opening Reception: Friday, August 11, 5- 8 PM
Location: Lightning Gallery

In Corso and Doyle’s Entre Nous, the viewer is invited into their private worlds of love, sex, desire, and devotion. The exhibition, consisting of multi-media works including photography, painting, sculpture, film, and installation, details the artists’ relationship to these themes, as well as its formation during the tumblr era of the early 2010s. Corso and Doyle act as both subject and author in their self-portraits, and include their personal items within the works. Their semiotic approach is personal, using imagery and objects that encompass their first-hand experience; text, stickers, tattoos, rhinestones, glitter, ribbon, rubber, and various toys reference an embodied experience.

Shelby Corso (b. 1997, New York) received her BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland. Her interdisciplinary practice includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. Corso’s work explores the semiotics and everyday poetics of girihood, encompassing experiences of desire, sexuality, taste, and self-reflection through the lens of femininity. She uses imagery from fairytales and other fictional genres, pop culture, as well as images and objects from everyday life.

Ali Doyle (b. 1998, Massachusetts; works in New York City) received her BA in Film and Screen Studies from Pace University in 2020, and studied at The American University of Paris in 2018-19. Doyle works in photographic collage, and is the founder of the independent publication, In the Middle, a slice-of-life magazine highlighting a growing community of artists and creatives. She is concerned with the poetry of the everyday, and is influenced by retro aesthetics and fashion from the mid-late 20th century, as well as the early 2000’s.
