Artist Statement:
My work is an investigation into the past. I am interested in what has been discarded over time, such as personal memories, societal norms, and fashions of the times. My source material is often lifted from vintage magazines and books that portray cultural ideals, concepts which I disassociate from their original contexts. I am particularly interested in studying the conventional roles of women as illustrated in these sources, using my artwork to challenge and subvert these notions.
My practice is a blend of mixed media collage experiments and a series of full-scale paintings inspired by them. I am very interested in collage as a medium that links past and present, transcends time, and encourages keen and creative observations about our world. To me it is an exercise of free association, and a play on surrealism and mysticism.
