In this two-day intensive workshop with Catherine Cross Tsintzos, students will have a chance to learn about papermaking and make paper, and also connect with South Carolina from the foothills to the sea!
Students will learn how to cook plant material for creating paper pulp that has been gathered from the fields, farm rows, the instructors indigo garden and has washed ashore on local beaches. Expect to learn how to dye paper with indigo, turmeric root, yellow root, hibiscus, black walnut, chestnut, add natural plant colorants and inclusions like indigo leaves and seeds, colored cotton, sea island cotton, flower petals, pine needles and more in pulps made from abaca, kona, denim, cotton linters and gathered plant material. Learn how to create paper with recycled papers and fun party paper. Leave the workshop with the knowledge of paper sizing both internally and applied to laid sheets. Learn about watermarks, pulp pouring and painting and how to make your own mould and deckle.
Learn about cooking down raw materials, pounding, terminology, tools and techniques. View and touch handmade paper examples and see how handmade paper has been used for making books and creating visual storytelling elements for stand alone pieces and collage.
At the end of this workshop expect to leave with hands on experience and the knowledge to create paper at home, a portfolio of different paper examples and two handmade books using two styles of Japanese side binding stitch.
All supplies are provided by the instructor and will include a plentiful array of materials for each student to create a variety of papers with a vast offering of materials, tools, handouts and an end of class website for reference. Participants are of course free to bring their own materials to supplement as well.
Bring a bag lunch, snacks and beverages.
