Sunday: 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 pm at Redux Contemporary Art Center

Learn the history and techniques of miniature painting alongside artist Beth de Loiselle. During this workshop
participants will have a private tour of the Gibbes museum’s prestigious American portrait miniature collection.

Beth will then spend a full day following to demonstrate and work with students to start and finish a miniature while providing insights on composition, materials, and more! Following the demonstration, participants will begin their own work of art with Beth’s guidance.

SUPPLY LIST:

Surfaces, 2 or more of the following depending on skill level and difficulty of the composition:

-Ivorine (no larger than 3” in any direction to avoid buckling)
-Gesso board
-Piano key
-Porcelain
*If you are painting to fit a particular frame please bring the frame with you

Brushes:
-When choosing your brushes keep in mind the subject matter that you will be working on as well as the size of
the painting surface. The smaller and more detailed the piece the more likely you will need more precise
brushes for that given area. Feel free to bring your collection of brushes and Beth will guide you on selecting
the appropriate sizes for your painting
-Your set should include an assortment of filberts and rounds ranging from sizes 1 to 4 (Monarch, synthetic,
sable and bristles brushes) If using ivorine as your painting surface avoid bristle brushes.
-An assortment of detail brushes in sizes 20/0 up to 0, both in round and filbert tips
-Blending brushes in various sizes (should have the softness of a blush brush)

Fine grit sandpaper: 400 grit or higher
Mechanical pencil:
.05 or smaller
Eraser, one of the following: Tombow Mono Zero Eraser Round 2.3 mm OR Factis BM-2 Mechanical Eraser
Double sided tape: Scotch Permanent Double Sided Tape
Larger surface to tape your miniature to such as a board or thick cardboard approximately 8×10
Clean Rags: Painters Rags, Viva Paper Towels, or cut up cotton shirts
Palette (if you are using palette paper the grey toned is preferred)
Mahlstick

Solvents:
No solvents please due to a sensitivity (this includes turpentine, gamsol, any odorless mineral spirits, turpenoid,
paint thinners etc…) Beth will explain how to work without them for those who have never done so before.

Painting medium, one of the following:
Maroger Italian medium from the Schuler School of Fine Arts (this version is solvent free)
Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel
