Redux is collaborating with The Gibbes Museum of Art and photographer and Redux Studio Artist J. Kevin Foltz for this specially tailored 2-weekend workshop where participants will have a full experience of film photography using a medium format HOLGA camera, and including a curated, guided tour of The Gibbes photography collection. Following this tour, students will participate in taking photos, processing film, and making prints in Redux’s darkroom.

Day: Saturdays and Sundays, September 11-12 & 18-19, 2021
Time: 10:00am-2:00pm with a short lunch break
Cost: $435 for Members, and $545 for NonMembers. *Member pricing applies to Gibbes and Redux Members.*
This price includes a guided tour of this exhibition at The Gibbes, as well as film, chemicals, and photographic paper (provided by Redux).
Students will need to bring their own HOLGA 120N Medium Format Film Camera for this workshop, pricing starts at $40 with suggested retailers listed below. 

 

This class will teach students to make artistic photographs with a medium format Holga camera. In the class, students will learn to expose film and develop photographs with artistic sensibilities. Each student will bring their own Holga camera which Kevin will teach them to use and later develop the film and photographic prints in the Redux darkroom. The instruction will take place over two weekends at The Gibbes and Redux.

Saturday, September 11th: at The Gibbes Museum of Art.
Join Gibbes staff for a behind-the-scenes tour of black and white images from the museum’s collection. Afterwards, Kevin will give instruction of how to “see” in black and white and lead the students around the historic district of Charleston making images.

Sunday, September 12th: at Redux.
Kevin will speak about film development.Students will develop the film photographed on the previous day in the Redux darkroom.

Saturday, September 18th: at Redux.
Kevin will talk about making photographic prints in the darkroom. The workshop participants will then make contact sheets and selections for making final prints.

Sunday, September 19th: at Redux.
Discussion about what makes an ideal photographic print. Students will make photographs in the darkroom ready for display.


What to bring: ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED
*Cameras are available for your use for this workshop! NO need to purchase unless you’d like!*
– Participants may bring an operating HOLGA 120N medium format film camera on June 5th, if they have one. See suggested retailers listed below if you’d like to purchase, or email megan@reduxstudios.org with questions.

– For the days spent at Redux, the students should bring darkoom towels and a bagged lunch or snack.
– Redux will provide film, chemicals and photographic paper.

– Class size is limited to a maximum of 6 participants.
– Masks/face coverings will be required for COVID compliancy.
