BYOB

I have been screen printing since 2009, as a child my favorite art to look at was what could be found in album leaflets in music records. Naturally, all the drawing I did in my spare time growing up would lead me to a desire to learn how to screen print. I never got into it for anyone other than myself and it was always a passionate hobby of mine, but eventually the process led me to open Charlietown Prints back in 2014. It’s been an absolute joy to design and collaborate with musicians such as Shovels and Rope, Doom Flamingo, Susto and other artists to create fun dynamic gig posters for their shows. The majority of my progression as a screen printer has been mostly from the mistakes I made and the lessons learned from them. Despite what those around me would say about my prints, it took five years for I myself to be proud of a print I created. This four week class will teach and discuss the many nuances involved in the print process and requires no previous screen printing experience, but seasoned printers are certainly welcome for the chance of learning a new trick or two!

Each student will go home with 20 of their own three color hand pulled prints and leave class with a comprehensive understanding of what they need to know to produce their own prints in the future.

WEEK 1 : INTRODUCTION TO MATERIALS, SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT

The first night of class will be an overview of equipment and materials that will be used to create the print over the remaining four weeks. Materials covered will include emulsion, scoop coater, difference in squeegees, difference in screen mesh counts as well as inks. Students will coat two screens each on night one. Class will end with a demonstration showing how to expose a screen.

WEEK 2 : EXPOSE SCREEN AND PRINT COLOR ONE OF DESIGN

During the week between classes, students will come up with their three color design and in the second class session they will expose the screen for their first color. This class will focus on the importance of registration for lining up colors in order to make sharp crisp prints. After printing the first color of their design, students will learn how to reclaim a screen and also coat a new screen to be used for next class.

WEEK3 : PRINT COLOR TWO OF DESIGN

As class progresses, usually the questions get a lot more detailed, this is the night when we will all be in the thick of the process. The method to get to printing the next color is the same but this is the night where we see the importance of precision and consistency, this is when the process of printing starts to unmask itself and let you really start to learn it’s subtleties.

WEEK4 : PRINT FINAL COLOR OF DESIGN AND REVEL IN YOUR NEWLY LEARNED ABILITIES!

The method of making each color for each print is essentially the same, but by the time students leave the final class they will understand the full process of screen printing on more than just a surface level. Odds are, this won’t be the last time I see those who take this course as most of my prior students look forward to going into their next design with the confidence gained from learning the previously unknown details involved with screen printing. It is a great partner to mix with most of mediums of art and for those that want to continue it in the future. I am happy to help guide with the Hand of Todd.
