Part 1: January 19, 2021
This introductory level class is not a follow-the-steps/make-a-painting class but will teach the basic mechanics of painting with opaque media.
Topics include:
– how to use, blend and apply paint in an effective, efficient and organized manner to create a finished composition
– brushes and their uses, cleaning and care
– color theory, where it differs in practical application, and mixing to achieve different colors and shades
Part 2: January 26, 2021

Building on the basic knowledge of paint, brushes, color and mixing from Beginning Painting Part I, this
introductory level class will teach the basic mechanics of creating a composition in opaque media
working from a tabletop still-life setup.
Topics include:
– how to plan and sketch out a composition prior to applying paint
– how to apply paint in an ordered manner through a logic sequence of layers
– sense of depth through shadows and highlights

Materials and equipment will be provided for in-class use, however, a personal supply of paints and brushes is recommended for continued use at home! See suggested materials below.
SUPPLIES (provided for in-class use)
– Basic paints assortment (in tubes only):
  — Black
  — White
  — a bright Red (such as Cadmium)
  — a deep Red (such as Alizarin Crimson)
  — a deep Green (such as Phthalo or Hookers)
  — a deep Blue (such as Ultramarine or Cobalt)
  — Cerulean Blue
  — Yellow
  — Yellow Ochre
  — Burnt Umber
  — Raw Sienna
  — Violet
– An assortment of brushes (both round and flat)
– Palette or plastic trays for mixing
