No experience necessary for this fun and dynamic introduction to the art of batik. Batik is an ancient art form that uses wax resist and dye on fabric to create colorful designs and imagery. For those interested in learning a new art form, this class will walk students through the process as they become confident using the special tools and materials unique to batik. We’ll focus on images from nature as our subject matter, and each student will finish with a large-scale batik work to display or use as a decorative fabric in another project.

About the Teaching Artist:

Eliza has been a public school art teacher for the last 15 years. She earned her undergraduate degree in Studio Art from the College of Charleston before relocating to NYC where she attended NYU and graduated with her master’s in Art Education. Missing the warm weather and salty breezes of the lowcountry, she returned to Charleston and continued her work as an art educator. Over the years, Eliza has taught children in grades K-12 with the Gibbes Museum of Art and both the Charleston County and Berkeley County School Districts. She loves the unique energy and engagement found in each level of student from beginner to advanced. When not making or teaching art, you can find Eliza hanging with her brood of three daughters, gardening, hiking, or rollerskating.
