Celeste Caldwell

Celeste Caldwell is a mixed media artist from Charleston, South Carolina. She has a Bachelor in Fine Arts from College of Charleston, with a concentration in painting. She completed a work-study at Arrowmont School of Arts & Craft in 2019 where she studied fiber collage and encaustics.
Caldwell’s work utilizes a variety of methods and mediums to explore the intimacy and fragility of human relationships. She explores the cross sections of her life, her family history, and that of strangers – often repurposing 3-D items as a container for new 2-D storytelling. She mixes traditional drawing and painting with freeform stitching, encaustic collage, image transfers, and found objects. Her work is made with a thoughtfulness towards transparency and vulnerability, frequently incorporating themes of femininity with traditional women’s crafts like quilting, sewing, etc. She is constantly learning new crafts, unopposed to creating a naivety within her body of work. Caldwell is deeply inspired by Southern folk culture, antiques, family memorabilia, and vintage children’s illustrations.
