Exquisite Corpse

by New Music Collective and Charleston Community

Definition

(also known as “exquisite cadaver” or “rotating corpse”) A method by which a group of words, images, or sounds are collectively assembled, the result being known as the exquisite corpse. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed. Once the final piece is complete the work can be unfolded to reveal a new composition which is a synthesis of several unique styles.

About the Exhibition

On May 25th 2007 the Redux Contemporary Art Center presented “The Exquisite Corpse,” an open call exhibition celebrating the unique collaborative surrealist drawing technique that has been in existence since the early 20th Century. Used by artists, writers, and musicians, this process allowed multiple individuals the opportunity to create a single work of art with only marginal knowledge of each others contributions.

Concert

The Exquisite Corpse concert was conceived of and organized by local composer Ray Evanoff, in collaboration with the New Music Collective. The event integrated 12 original compositions written by 8 young composers into a single, continuous work. This was done by using an adaptation of the Surrealist Exquisite Corpse technique.
