Sean Robinson | RECEIVER FESTIVAL

This performance was organized by Receiver Time Based Media Festival.
A Brief History of Time: The Workout is a performance that takes the act of summarization to an absurd extreme, by capturing in sequence just the personal names, impressive numbers, and instances of the word “body” found in the text. The performance is based on Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time which is a 175 page book that summarizes two and a half thousand years of physics discourse.
“Does it make sense to ask what has been omitted for the sake of brevity? For starters, aside from Hawking’s immediate family, there are only five women mentioned amidst a parade of male physicists.
The Brief History of Time Workout is a 20 minute exercise program. What is abbreviated in a workout? The Jig Don’t Jog workout video borrows movements from Irish folk dance. Similarly, dances can represent the dancer’s labors, for the sake of healing. If a dance involves rapid neck movements we might look for the dancer in the daytime with her neck bent over garment-making. Dances and workouts share this in common: If they are healing it is in the representative manner of sacrament.
What sorts of sacrament heal now? This Brief History of Time Workout is not only for those bent over telescope lenses and texts of theoretical physics, but also for those aggregating demographic trend analyses and improving their items-per-basket scores. If we are going to do sacrament to heal our information aches, we are going to have to sweat for it!”
