Professional Development Day for Artists
Sept 18, 2010Emerging Artist strategies: Professional Development Day at Redux for Visual Artists
Redux Contemporary Art Center was proud to offer a professional development day for visual artists in the Lowcountry. Visiting artist Carson Fox led this one-day workshop on Saturday September 18, 11am – 5pm. This workshop was intended for any visual artist looking to gain a better understanding of the ‘non-art-making’ aspects to being an artist. Fox presented the audience with valuable knowledge and resources for building a successful career as an artist. Lunch was provided by the Recovery Room Tavern, and included corn dogs, tater tots and a vegetarian option.
This one-day seminar addressed the practical needs of the emerging artist as she or he begin to participate in the professional world. Topics included: defining goals, artist statements, resumes, biographies, creating cohesive presentation packages, documenting work, gallery relationships, exhibition venues, residencies, grants, and creative networking.
In this course, students acquired a well-informed understanding of the professional expectations of the art world that will augment their careers as visual artists. Successful participants gained a greater understanding of the specific needs of “art” writing, including the creation of effective artist statements, project applications, and grant proposals. Students gained an increased understanding of art venues from both a local and national perspective, including: the basic workings of commercial galleries and their types, not-for-profit spaces, museums, art fairs, and collaborative workshops. Lastly, students gained demonstrable research skills in seeking artist residencies, artist grants, and other opportunities, as well as know the components of effective presentation packets.
A comprehensive list of artist grants, national and international artist residencies, slide registries, and research materials were provided for every student on a CD. Additionally, materials on artist statements, biographies, presentation packets, cover letters, formatting images, and good artistic habits were provided.
This event was sponsored in part by Artist & Craftsman supply and the Recovery Room Tavern.
