Natacha Diels, solo flute with Ron Wiltrout, solo percussion
Mar 6, 2009Natacha Diels first came to Charleston in March 2008 to perform with Red Light New Music. That ensemble also performed at Redux, and it was a great showing of newly-written, newly-conceived music for small chamber group. One of the standout performances, though, was Natacha’s solo for flute and electronics. It was immediately apparent that she is a virtuoso flautist, and it was also obvious that she knows how to use electronics as a natural extension of the flute. She came to Charleston to perform a show of mostly works written for or by her. This show also served as part of the unveiling of an instrument that Natacha built for herself: The Superflute.
Natacha Diels was born in Los Angeles in 1981 and spent most of her childhood in New Mexico. She received an education in music technology and performance at New York University, where she founded the new music group Ensemble Pamplemousse in 2002, and incorporated it into a not-for-profit in 2004. In addition to Pamplemousse, Natacha performs in both contemporary classical and improvised contexts, with various ensembles such as On Structure, Tall Brown Boots, and Red Light New Music. She has participated as a performer and composer in new music and art festivals worldwide, including Ostrava Days, Harold Arts, and summer school at STEIM. Natacha maintains a long-standing passion for electroacoustic chamber works, and occasionally composes pieces and toys for Pamplemousse.
Ron Wiltrout has been playing professionally in the Charleston area for six years. His schooling at the University of South Carolina dealt with many facets of percussion and music, but he chose to focus on the drum set as an expressive, adaptable musical instrument. He performs regularly in the regional Southeast with ensembles ranging from jazz to free improvisation to avant-garde classical music to professional stage shows and recording sessions. An avid performer of new music, he has premiered pieces by Ted Hearne, Ray Evanoff, Philip White, and Nathan Koci in recent years. He has performed and worked with Robert Lewis and Frank Duvall, Tommy Gill, Bert Ligon, Lee Barbour, Brad Moranz, Havanason, Duda Lucena, Kopaja, Ted Hearne, Your Bad Self, Brazil, the Rudy Waltz, and the New Music Collective.
