Acoustic bassist Jason Ajemian is one of the members of the underground music scene in Chicago, playing a variety of creative improvised, noise, and experimental musics based in rock and jazz. He is a graduate of the William Patterson University of New Jersey, where he studied with bassist Rufus Reid and percussionist Kevin Norton. Arriving in Chicago in the fall of 2000, Ajemian embraced the then burgeoning progressive music community. Ajemian also vocalizes and utilizes electronics. His dizzying number of credits include work with Rob Mazurek, the Exploding Star Orchestra, Dragons 1976, Lay All Over It, Born Heller, Matt Bauder, Ken Vandermark’s Crisis Ensemble, Who Cares How Long You Sink, Triage, Mandarin Movie, the Chicago Underground Trio, and countless others. For this band and tour Jason created scores in the architectural drawing software AutoCAD to create visual blueprints that dictate the flow and motion of a musical set as well as open the performers up to visual influences. The performers had pictographic schematics representing both the overall flow of the set as well as close-ups of individual sections. While not the first time such things have been done, it was definitely a development of the concept, and to hear top improvisers navigate it was a treat. With Jacob Wick on trumpet, Peter Hansen on sax, Owen Stewart-Robertson on guitar, Marc Riordan on drums, and the composer himself Jason Ajemian on bass and vocals.
There was a presentation beforehand at 6pm where the composer and performers discussed the creation and implementation of their output. This presentation was free to everyone with help from grant support from the Coastal Community Foundation.
