Redux offers year-round art classes and workshops to the public for both kids and adults. Over 100 classes and workshops are available throughout the year covering a variety of topics both traditional and non-traditional. We have a class for everyone whether you are a beginner or more advanced artist looking to broaden and enhance your talents. Our classes are affordable, fun, challenging and taught by talented local qualified instructors. Courses include painting, photography, drawing, printmaking, art history and much more. All courses are timed to fit the schedules of working people and are taught by working professional artists. Through our classes, workshops and studio space, we provide the guidance and resources you need to bring your creativity and passion to life.

In addition to our paid education classes, Redux holds outreach classes for local after-school groups such as the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, YO Art!, and Girl Scouts. These classes are offered year round at no cost to the students.

Sunday Figure Drawing Sessions

Sundays,  5pm-7pm

This independent figure drawing class allows students to work from a live model in a variety of artistic mediums. Easels, chairs, and custom lighting provided. Artists need to bring their own drawing materials and board.

 

Three-Day Introduction to Encaustic Painting

August 2 - 4, 9:30am – 5:30pm

This three-day intensive workshop combines beginning and intermediate techniques for a complete and balanced introduction to encaustic painting. Students will learn about the history of encaustic painting, supports, grounds and panel preparation, how to layer and collage with wax to create your very own encaustic paintings. Each student will have the opportunity to experiment and create 5 – 10 finished paintings. All materials included!

 

Found Object Functional Sculpture

Tuesdays, 6pm – 8pm
August 3 - 24
      
Instructor: Megan Loder

In this four-week class, students will use low cost experimental methods to transform used or discarded objects into a functional light fixture. Found objects could range from trash to something picked up at the thrift store. Each student will transform recycled materials into a beautiful new light/lamp for their home. No experience necessary. Most materials included!


Acrylic Mixed Media Painting

Thursdays, 7pm – 9pm

This four-week class aims to push the acrylic painter to experiment with abstraction and incorporate new media into the work. The student will learn practical techniques for combining and layering a variety of source materials including their own photographs and cut-outs from newspapers and magazines. Students will use these techniques to create two finished paintings during this four- week course. Materials included!

 

Screen Printing Class

Mondays, 6:30pm – 9pm
August 9 - 30

Instructors: Karen Ann Myers and olive*argyle

This four-week class is a continuation of the screen printing fundamentals covered in the One Night Workshop! Students will learn how to emulsify screens, burn images, and will work independently on their own projects. Instruction will include layout design and exposure to a variety of techniques in order to produce posters, prints, T-shirts, etc in as many colors as desired. Screen Printing One Night Workshop is a pre-requisite for this class. Most materials provided.

 

Introduction to Drawing

Wednesdays, 6 - 8pm

Develop fundamental skills in this four-week class concentrating on drawing with pencil and charcoal. Master the basics of creating sophisticated drawings while experimenting with media and finding your own drawing style. No experience necessary. Materials included!

 

Intermediary Jewelry for Beginners

In this three-week class, students will design and make a silver hollow construction ring.  Techniques include piercing, sawing, filing, soldering, hammering, forming and finishing. Students are provided with all tools, equipment and silver. Beginner’s Jewelry is a pre-requisite for this class.

 

Daytime Figure Drawing I

This four-week class is a survey of the figurative drawing tradition. Students will learn about a variety of artists, periods and styles, while working from a live model. By using a variety of drawing media, students will learn the basic techniques and skills necessary to hone a personal style. The class will include a brief lesson and discussion of periods and techniques of figurative drawing, from Rembrandt and the old masters, to Picasso and Giacometti. Students will be encouraged to draw from the past as a way to develop a unique and individual style.

 

Experimenting with Monoprints

Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 4pm (hour break for lunch)

In this weekend workshop, students will explore the intriguing possibilities of monoprinting. Students will investigate monoprinting with various inks and paints, image sizes, and types of paper. Much experimentation is encouraged and the instructor will guide and assist with the printing. No experience necessary. Materials included!

The Silk Road to Soho: Genius and Vision in the Fine and Decorative Arts

This four-week lecture-based class will cover the major political, social, and artistic developments that are a requisite for a basic understanding of the last five centuries of Western painting, sculpture, and decorative arts. From Marco Polo to Damien Hirst, discover how Americans’ entry into the international art market brought about a 180 degree change in the way we value art.

 

Spirit Animal Soft Sculpture

Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 3pm  (one hour break for lunch)

In this introspective and creative weekend workshop, students will discuss and identify an animal of particular relevance to their own life journey. Students will create a soft sculpture re-creation of this animal while learning a variety of sewing skills. Some sewing experience preferred. Materials included.

 

Introduction to Acrylic Painting

This four-week class introduces students to the tools and techniques artists use to create successful works of art in one of the most versatile mediums available today. Learn the basics of mixing colors, blending and a variety of acrylic painting techniques. Introduction to Book Arts

Daytime Figure Drawing II

This four-week class is a continuation of the skills developed in the figurative drawing course.  Settings, environments and props will be considered as a way to give the figure a sense of place and narrative.  Instruction in foreshortening, distortion and personal expression will be used as a way to consider the dynamic complexities and human psychology of drawing the figure based upon the techniques gained in the previous course.

 

Introduction to Copper Plate Etching (The World of Intaglio)

In this four-week class, we will explore the classic process of etching and printing copper plates. Intaglio etching is a process made famous by Masters like Durer and Rembrandt. The End is Near:  How to Survive the Impending Apocalypse

The signs are clear, the end is near. Economic meltdown, war, and climate change may be indications that our world is changing in a dramatic way. It is time to prepare and this class will provide you with the tools to survive. Sessions will be split between technical demonstrations and group discussions focusing on the signs of impending doom, the traditional and religious views on the subject, and extreme recycling techniques that can be used in an urban environment for the production of energy, food, and water when those resources become scarce. By the end (of the class) students will have all the necessary information and resources to develop a self-sustaining radically simplified independent existence. 

 

Introduction to Letterpress Fundamentals

In this two-week class, students will learn to print their own cards and broadsides the way Ben Franklin did - with handset type! Participants will become familiar with the equipment of the pressroom, learn basic letterpress techniques and produce an edition of original prints in two weeks! No experience necessary! Recycled Collage Scavenger Hunt

In this one night workshop, students will create a unique collage using items found in their junk drawer at home. Prior to the workshop, participants will be instructed to go on a scavenger hunt for common household items that will be turned into a beautiful piece of artwork. The collages will be constructed using colorful painted papers, old drawings, letters, and positive and negative shapes, bits and pieces of fabric, etc -- the possibilities are open and endless. No experience necessary!

 

Beginners Jewelry with Recycled Found Object

In this three-week class, students will learn to make a silver ring, pendant, or brooch with beginner’s jewelry techniques.  Students can include a recycled found object in their piece or a cabochon stone provided by the instructor.  Techniques include piercing, sawing, soldering, hammering, bezel setting and finishing.  Students are provided with all tools, equipment and silver. No experience necessary!

 

Introduction to Block Printing (Woodcut)

This four-week printmaking class will introduce students to block printing and equip them with the basic knowledge and skills needed to create a woodcut print. Different techniques, tools, papers and printing methods will be demonstrated and discussed. Each student will complete one block and a small edition of that work. No experience necessary. This four-week course covers the essentials of oil painting! Students will learn what oil paint is capable of, while discovering how it fits with their own individual style and process. Demonstrations on proper studio practice and painting techniques, combined with students' own exploration with paint in the classroom, will leave the students feeling confident. Daytime Intuitive Figure Drawing

Tuesdays, 10am - 1pm

This four-week class will explore an intuitive approach to the representation of the human figure using a live model. Information from observed reality will be used to create works reflective of each artist’s emotion, style, personal vision and interest in materials. All medias, styles and techniques will be encouraged. Students will be pushed to stretch the limits of their imagination, ability and concept of working from life. The rigorous nature of the workshop will challenge students to step out of their comfort zone. The goal of the workshop is to push students to reach their full potential of creative momentum and find a voice, passion and ability that they didn’t know they had. Some materials included.

 

Private Lessons in Black & White Photography

9 hours of Instruction Structured Around Your Schedule
Instructor: Nancy Santos

Students will learn how to use all the settings on their camera to make more expressive photographs. Students can also expect to learn how to develop and print 35mm B&W film. Depending on your skill level, you will learn how to build on creative techniques to make more expressive photographs. Redux will provide the chemicals for developing; students need to provide their own photo paper, film, and camera. No experience necessary!
